Levi Looks, diagnosed through newborn screening with “bubble
boy” disease, is a healthy toddler thanks to gene therapy, resurgent now after
early setbacks, MIT Technology Review reports. The idea is elegant, the story
notes. Using an engineered virus, deliver healthy copies of a gene into
patients made sick by defective versions. Two gene therapy have been approved
in Europe, and the U.S. is expected to follow suit.
