Leslie Kean, MD, PhD, has joined Dana-Farber/Boston Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Center as the Director of the Stem Cell Transplantation program. Kean will assume overall leadership in the program's clinical practice and research in coordination with the Clinical Director, Leslie Lehmann, MD.
"Dr. Kean will spearhead our efforts to increase interventional clinical trial activities, including in graft-versus-host disease and cellular therapies, taking advantage of her own research and the depth of immunology and hematopoiesis research going on in our program and in the Longwood Medical Area," said David A. Williams, MD, President of Dana-Farber/Boston Children's. "We also anticipate Dr. Kean will be a key to increased trial coordination with the adult program, and she will serve as Co-Director of the Global Initiative for our program with Dr. Lehmann."
Prior to joining Dana-Farber/Boston Children's, Kean was promoted to Professor of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Wash., while also serving as a full member of the Fred Hutchison Cancer Center. She served as well as the Associate Director of the Ben Towne Center for Childhood Cancer Research at Seattle Children's Hospital.
Kean has also held the position of Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in the Department of Pediatrics at Emory University.
Kean is internationally known for her basic work in immune tolerance and graft versus host disease research and clinical trial activities. In addition to many honors, she is also recognized as a superb teacher and mentor. She is a standing member of the Transplant Tolerance and Tumor Immunology (TTT) Study Section at the National Institute of Health.
Kean plays key leadership roles in the national and international transplant community. She is the Chair of the Steering Committee for the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Health Volunteers Overseas Collaboration and is currently the course director of the ASH-EHA Translational Research Training in Hematology program. She also serves as the Project Co-Director of the Children's International Consortium on Acute Leukemia (C-ICAL) for ASH, as Vice Chair of the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium (PBMTC), and on the Cellular Therapeutics Strategy Group. She is Chair of the Biomarkers Committee on Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT-CTN).
Kean received her BA from Case Western University, a Master of Philosophy from Cambridge University and MD/PhD from Emory. She completed her clinical training at the Children's Hospital of Atlanta, where she continued in her faculty and leadership roles before moving to Seattle.
